Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are the heart of Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust

They build trails, lead programs or work with youth groups.

Volunteers also staff our Governance, Outreach, Stewardship, Finance and Development committees and serve on our board.

If you’d like to volunteer, e-mail [email protected] or call 207 469-6929 and tell us about your interests.

Sign up for our email newsletter to get updates on all the latest opportunities!

Some of the specific opportunities we have going at various times of the year:

Boundary maintenance and orienteering – Work with our forester and/or Steward and volunteers to locate, cut and paint sections of Great Pond Mountain Wildlands boundary line. Learn boundary maintenance, some orienteering and forestry and spend time in some of Hancock County’s most rugged and beautiful country. Our boundary crew, Roger’s Linear Rangers generally meet Friday mornings in certain seasons. If you’d like to join, contact Roger.

Forestry – Work with our steward and/or forester on a number of forestry projects, from locating and shearing Christmas trees, to releasing apple trees, to planting chestnut trees to thinning forest stands.

Adopt-A-Path  – Working individually or as a group, adopt a path in the Wildlands and visit at least twice a year (starting in April) to maintain it. Can be done on your own time. Requirements include willingness to spend time outdoors (with bugs), ability to use hand tools such as saws and loppers, and physical fitness to be able to hike distances.

Outreach and education – Work with staff on visitor information, outreach and educational programs for GPMCT and in the Great Pond Mountain Wildlands. Projects include:

  • Educational Programs – join our staff to work with groups of students on a hike or during a classroom activity
  • Staff a booth – GPMCT has a booth at various events throughout the year, and could always use help!
  • Newsletter assistant – Work with staff to write articles for the land trust newsletter and/or release to newspapers, and/or take photos to go with the article.
